Located in the Vega Archipelago, halfway along Norway’s coastline, it’s all about the eider ducks here. The islanders who help look after the birds relocate to Lånan between April and July to carry out maintenance tasks and prepare for the arrival of the nesting ducks. They prepare nests from seaweed and do all that they can to ensure a successful nesting season. Once the ducks have arrived and the eggs have been laid, their keepers will patrol the area for predators like mink, otters and crows. In June, the hatchlings will appear, and the mother and ducklings will leave a few weeks later. And then it’s time to collect the harvest – the precious eiderdown. This symbiotic relationship that the islanders have with the ducks is a cultural heritage that has existed for generations and one that they are proud to continue.
