At the height of summer, wildlife activity peaks on Svalbard, offering visitors the opportunity to experience some incredible wildlife sightings. You will have a good chance of spotting walrus, reindeer, ringed seals, Arctic foxes and vast numbers of bird species in Svalbard at this time of year. And, of course, the King of the Arctic, the mighty polar bear. Once heavily hunted, Svalbard’s polar bears have been protected since 1973, and their population numbers remain healthy. They can be spotted throughout the archipelago; however, in summer, they are drawn more towards the icier regions in the northwest and on the east coast.
