They inhabit coastal areas, coral reefs and seagrass beds, playing a vital role in maintaining seagrass ecosystems. The island of Poilao, a captivating destination within the Bijagós archipelago, is renowned as a haven for green sea turtles. While not considered extremely rare, green sea turtles are classified as an endangered species. Poilao’s preservation efforts ensure the continued survival of these remarkable creatures. Marvel at their graceful presence in the crystalclear waters and witness the nesting sites where female green sea turtles return to their birth beaches to delicately lay their eggs. They dig nests in the sand and lay a clutch of around 100 to 200 eggs, which incubate for approximately 60 days, with hatching babies making their way to the ocean.
